A Daily Dish - Klari Reis

When doing some further research after the tutorial with Laura, I wanted to look further into the petri dish idea that we had. I thought this would be an exciting avenue to explore as each outcome is different and it could create some inspirational imagery. I stumbled across Klari Reis who in 2013 revisited an idea that she had in 2009 called ‘The Daily Dish' this idea was to post a different petri dish painting everyday of the year 2013.

Her paintings are really interesting and take on cellular forms. This is an interesting take on the use of a petri dish, the idea of a scientific container with art inside is more intriguing than just another science project. Her work is exciting as she uses a mix of vibrant colours and no two petri dishes are the same.

Print Room: Seer Sucker

We wanted to further develop our recent experiments with the ice and microwaved soap; we wanted to portray this with the use of fabric as we felt that the soap had taken on a cloud-like structure. Alice took some natural based fabrics into the print room and used the Seer Sucker technique to create a chemical reaction within the fabric. The reaction was not how we expected to the naked eye however once we scanned the fabric, it became more relevant to our project. We decided not to continue work in the print room as it was not working for us and was simply wasting time.

Laura Tutorial - Week 4

As we were told last week to 'make things' and to have more visual outcomes, this is exactly what we brought to this tutorial. As a group we were really happy with the pace our work was gathering and how inspiring we were finding our project. Laura seemed to really like our idea but again wanted us to push it further and explore every avenue possible. Time stop imagery will be included in our trend book as well as creating work in response to reactions and contamination. We need to look further into the use of fabrics and how technology can be incorporated within fabric. Laura also suggested we explore UV reactions.

Home Experiments

After the tutorial this week, the group decided we needed to sit down and come up with some solid ideas and 'go bigger'. We came across some really interesting home experiments which involved ice and salt, and another including putting soap into the microwave, this would be to visualise the 'virus' aspect of the trend as we do not want anything too literal. This meeting got a lot of thoughts going and we all took on different responsibilities in order to complete all of the tasks. I am looking forward to see how this all develops. As a group we decided that there needed to be a bigger body of research for the next day so that we could respond to this.

Alex & Laura Tutorial - Week 3

Alice, Grace and myself went to this tutorial with a few ideas but not completely prepared as we usually are, this left the tutorial quite open for discussion for new ideas. We discussed the idea that 'things' needed to be made; we needed more of our own work to respond to, which we all agreed upon. Also Alex and Laura wanted our ideas to be even bigger, even if they were not possible we still needed to explore bigger ideas. I agree with this, as our research seems to have gone a bit flat, this meeting was the push we needed to get the ball rolling again. We spoke about having more visual research of our own work, this is something that I constantly improve upon through each project, and however this still needs some attention. Throughout the rest of the project I plan to create new inspiring imagery every week to keep myself and the rest of the group inspired.
